The term digital signature is used to refer to a secure digital key that certifies the identity of the holder, different classes of e-signatures are created using Public Key Cryptography (PKC). Digital Signatures on any of the documents are submitted in an electronic form to ensure the authenticity and security of the documents filed electronically. This is the most secure and authentic way that a document can be submitted electronically. As such, all filings done by the companies under MCA21 e-Governance program are required to be filed with the use of Digital Signatures by the person authorized to sign the documents. A Digital Signature is issued by a Certifying Authority.

Digital Signature Certificate administers an electronic mechanism acting as an alternative means of proving an identity. It also provides you with a high level of security for your online transactions. You can use certificates to encrypt information to keep it secure, such that only the intended recipient can read it. In general Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is embedded into the internet explorer of the computing device but utilization of DSC via your computer system has following draw backs:
It can be misused by anyone who is having access to your computer system.
DSC is lost if computer system is formatted or internet explorer is changed or corrupted.
Accordingly, a safe and an optimum method is to keep DSC on e-token, which is a small USB port device protected by the password. E-token is a small hardware device and can be plugged into USB port of any system to digitally sign the documents and when not in use can be kept in safe custody.

A Digital Signature Certificate absolutely establishes the identity of an individual/device with a pair of electronic keys – public and private keys (which are encrypted) – and this association is endorsed by the CA. The DS certificate contains information about a user’s identity.
These public and private keys complement each other in that one does not function in the absence of the other. This information is required by the browsers and servers to encrypt and decrypt the identity of the certificate user during information exchange processes. The private key is stored on the user’s computer hard disk or on an external device such as a token. The user retains control of the private key; it can only be used with the issued password.
The public key is disseminated with the encrypted information. The authentication process fails if either one of these keys is not available or do not match. In this manner, the encrypted data cannot be decoded and unauthorized access is completely prohibited.
